Stress Related Hair Loss

There is a well-established link between emotional distress and anxiety and thinning hair.  Hair loss doesn’t usually happen immediately after a stressful event, but rather after about 6 to 12 weeks, linked to the hair’s usual growth cycles.  Given the long-term stress we have all been facing in recent months, it’s not surprising that many people are now seeing the impact on their hair.

Covid related hair loss and stress related hair loss are common issues. Your first step if you are concerned about hair loss, thinning hair or scalp issues is to book in for a consultation with our resident trichologist.

Hair loss and covid

«

We all know that Covid-19 is an aggressive virus that can cause severe damage in survivors, even those without the worst symptoms. It is now emerging that in some cases this can include hair loss.

The International Association of Trichologists has reported two different types of hair loss that can be attributed to the coronavirus: diffuse hair loss and alopecia areata. Scientists are still working to fully understand the way that Covid-19 attacks the body, but it is clear that the virus prompts a strong response from the immune system.

Please book a consultation so we can discuss your hair loss issues.

What are the best hair loss products?

«

We understand it can be confusing working out which hair product is right for you and will happily guide you through your choices based on your own personal needs.

«

It is normal to experience hair shedding postpartum, whether you are breastfeeding or not. If you're suffering from pregnancy or postpartum hair loss and notice that your hair loss lasts longer than 6 weeks, taking a supplement can be beneficial.

Why am I suddenly having hair loss? I always assumed it was only happened to men?

«

Unfortunately this is simply not the case, while health issues can speed up and also lead to hair loss, genetics play a vital role in the long-term health and support of our hair. For most people hair count, hair elasticity, and hair thickness will decrease as we age. While the pattern and length of time it takes to occur in women are different on average than in men, it is a reality of the aging process.

Do you provide a service to people already wearing hair pieces?

«

Yes we do. We can do maintenance top ups on those who already are wearing hair systems as long as we offer that particular hair system.

How long can you wear them before taking them off?

«

This depends on the system you have. Between 4-8 weeks and 12 weeks for full systems.

How long do hair replacement systems last?

«

This depends on the system that you have. Some systems last between 4-6 weeks before a maintenance appointment is needed. Full systems can last up to 12 weeks with a maintenance appointment in the middle.

Are there any medications or supplements that I could take to help with my hair loss problem?

«

Yes, there are many. The best thing to do is firstly make sure you have a diagnosis from a trichologist or your doctor. Once you have been advised by them then there are plenty of extra supplements on the market to help boost your iron, b12, vitamin D and many more. But make sure you research them as many don’t have enough extra supplements in them to really make a difference. I always recommend speaking to your hairdresser or trichologist on which brands they prefer to work with.

Does my diet/ nutrition have anything to do with my hair loss?

«

Yes is the simple answer. What you put inside your body is what feeds your cells and gives your hair the correct amount of vitamins and minerals it needs to have healthy growth. If you have a deficiency of any sort then this can have a detrimental effect on your hair growth.

Is hair loss determined by my mother or my father?

«

Many people believe her loss is passed down on the mother side.Well it's true a key gene for baldness is on the X chromosome, which you get from your mother, it is not the only genetic factor that plays in this, since men with bald fathers have an increased chance of going bald when compared to men whose fathers have a full set of hair.

Can wearing hats lead to hair loss?

«

This is untrue. It is a very commonly believed myth.

I'm worried that if I start my hair treatment journey too early my hair will get used to a product & may lead to my hair falling out faster?

«

This is absolutely the opposite of the approach experts recommend. In fact, the earlier you start your hair treatment the better the results. Waiting until the issue is more pronounced the odds of a successful turnaround are decreased.

Your healthy hair does not become used to any treatment, rather it is simply made stronger while the treatment is being utilised. If the treatment is discontinued, the hair returns to its natural growing normality and that may be detrimental as left to its own devices it will revert to its own natural cycle that lead you to the treatment in the first place.
